MEGAMAN^® Implemented Liquid Mercury FREE Manufacturing with Amalgam

MEGAMAN^® places environmental protection at the apex of the company agenda. During the years, the company strives to improve its lamp design, employ eco-friendly materials and develop new technologies for the sake of producing more energy efficient and eco-friendlier products. MEGAMAN^® Energy Saving Lamps are not only RoHS compliant, but further employs lead-free glass tubes, recyclable plastic, water-based adhesive, etc., to make its lamps much more earth-friendly. And the INGENIUM^® technology which is unique only to MEGAMAN^® makes its lamps even more compact, lighter and longer-lasting, further reducing material wastage and disposal on landfills.

Taking an aggressive step towards environmental protection, MEGAMAN^® has implemented Liquid Mercury Free green manufacturing process in its lamp production. Full range of MEGAMAN^® products have employed Amalgam instead of liquid mercury, making all its products FREE from liquid mercury. The aim of this Liquid Mercury Free policy is to minimise environmental impacts at different stages of the product life cycle. This act protects not only workers during production and transportation, but also end-users during usage and upon disposal, avoiding their exposure to liquid mercury.

Amalgam, which is in stable solid physical form, is an alloy of mercury combined with other metals. It provides an eco-friendlier and safer alternative to liquid mercury because mercury vapor would not be released until it reaches around 100oC under atmospheric pressure. At room temperature, mercury is concealed inside the metal alloy and would not escape even if the lamp breaks. It does not pose health hazard to the human beings and does not pollute the environment. The solid form of Amalgam makes the lamp even easier and safer to handle on disposal so that it would not lead to land and water contamination. In its solid form, the mercury inside Amalgam can be collected, recycled and reused more readily.

Technological advancements have enabled MEGAMAN^® Energy Saving Lamps to deliver excellent illumination performance with Amalgam at minimal mercury levels (less than 2mg on average, far below 5mg limited by the EU Requirement). This is far less mercury than in other items in the house, e.g. batteries (5-25 mg), thermometers (500 mg), etc.
