MEGAMAN^® and Royal College of Art Launch Light Matters Dark Volumes to Complete the Research Project

(Hong Kong – 27 Sep 2010) The successful collaboration between the MEGAMAN^® Charity Trust Fund and the Royal College of Art (RCA) Helen Hamlyn Centre is celebrated with the launch of the book Light Matters Dark Volumes by Research Associate Claudia Dutson on 29 September, 2010 at the Royal College of Art in London, U.K.

Research project challenged trends to define more creative, energy-efficient lighting options

Light Matters Dark Volumes is the culmination of a two-year research project by the Helen Hamlyn Centre's Research Associates Programme and supported by the MEGAMAN^® Charity Trust Fund. The project investigated the increasing levels of artificial light in commercial interiors and explored creative, energy-efficient and sustainable options to achieve improved interior lighting spaces while at the same time satisfying users' needs.

Concern with the stressful effects of high levels of light on workers was the top priority of this project. This led the researchers to examine perceptions of lighting, including physiological and behavioural issues, as well as the culture of lighting trends. They went on to reassess and challenge the recommendations of the U.K Code for Lighting and to consider a 'health-wise – work-efficient' approach to light levels and ambience in the workplace. Dynamic lighting strategies that incorporated eco-elements into commercial interiors were developed and analysed to conclude this phase of the research.

Research collaboration with industry in a people-centred approach

The RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre offers graduates of various disciplines the opportunity to carry out people-oriented design research and projects with industry. The MEGAMAN^® Charity Trust Fund actively supports community initiatives and research and education programmes, with a particular focus on sustainability and a people-centred approach to lighting design. Partnership with the RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre is therefore well-matched with the MEGAMAN^® Charity Trust Fund, and one that is set to continue.

Following the success of this first collaborative research project, the MEGAMAN^® Charity Trust Fund and the RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre have agreed a further two-year project to continue the research.
